At first the hare was only a quiet shape at the edge of the field—ears, stillness, a body that seemed made of light and caution. The narrator watched without expecting to be trusted. Days passed. Small patterns appeared: the same path at dusk, the same pause before crossing open ground.
Care, in this memoir, is not a grand speech. It is attention repeated until the animal’s presence rewrites the observer’s sense of home. The land does not become tame; the person becomes more careful. What changes is the distance between them—and the stories the narrator can no longer tell about living alone among wild things.
